FAQs about the Slow Cooker Porridge Recipe

Which Slow Cooker do you use and recommend?

I use: Morphy Richards Sear & Stew Slow Cooker (it’s light and you can use it for browning on the hob too).

For induction hob users: Lakeland Digital 6.5l Slow Cooker

Also! Top tip, for this recipe to work best, you do really need to use a timer. You can program it from an app on your phone. What a time to be alive.. I have these: Tp Link Tapo Smart Plug(Also you can set up with your Google or Alexa to say “Switch on Slow Cooker” WHATTT 🤯)

What type of oats should I use?

I strongly recommend using Jumbo oats as these will keep more of their texture when cooked for a long period.

What type of milk should I use?

I’ve tried this with cows milk, oat and almond milk and also just water. All of them work well.

I think almond milk is my favourite in this recipe. Let me know what you think if you try it.

My overnight slow cooker porridge is a bit smooth and slimy – please help!

This happens when it’s cooked for too long (or if you use rolled oats). I’d really recommend buying a timer for your slow cooker. I love this one: Tp Link Tapo Smart PlugYou can program it from an app on your phone. SO GOOD!

Ideally this only needs 3 hours to cook so you do need to use a timer. (Unless you don’t mind the very smooth texture!)

Servings: 2 People

Ingredients

  • 80 grams Jumbo Oats
  • 950 ml Milk
  • 1/2 tsp Salt, Optional

Instructions

Notes

Oats
You do need to use Jumbo Oats for this recipe. You can use rolled but they will cook much more quickly. Probably in just an hour.

Milk
I have tested dairy milks, non dairy and also water and all work well. So go with your own preference!

Salt
This is optional but it really really does finish off the porridge well and adds flavour.

  1. Hi Sarah. This recipe has been life changing for us! Thanks so much and for the smart plug tip. We wake up to porridge 2-3 times a week and the portion feeds all three of us. We can all add what we like but it really keeps you going all morning.

Have you ever used the stock pot bags that you put inside? I’m considering them to avoid the scrubbing when washing up 😂

    1. I don’t know if this helps or not, but we put the oats and milk in a bowl inside the slow cooker, so we can just put that in to soak/in the dishwasher instead.

I’m sure the liners would work too though ☺️
