Harry Potter’s fifth year at Hogwarts is filled with emotions. Harry becomes the epitome of an angsty teenager as he has to put up with Umbridge’s regime, Dumbledore ignoring him, navigating a romantic relationship, and constantly attempting to prove that Voldemort is back. Most tragically, he ends up losing one of the people who mattered most to him – Sirius.

No one would be able to survive all of that without some good wizarding food. We’ve put together 10 veganized recipes from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix for those times when you need to take a moment to ignore all of the intense things going on in your life.

Which will you choose when you fuel up for your next adventure?

Breakfast

The best way to start the day is with a light and tasty breakfast. Making time for this meal will ensure that you get all the nutrition and energy to get you going.

1.Fruit ‘N Bran Breakfast Cereal

In the first chapter of Order of the Phoenix, we’re plunged into the Muggle life Harry has to put up with during the holidays. Before Harry’s summer turns to chaos, he sees a cheerful commercial on the Durselys’ television showing an advertisem*nt for Fruit ‘N Bran breakfast cereal.

We’ve found some vegan breakfast cereal recipes that are as easy to make as they are delicious. From cold breakfast recipes with homemade muesli and strawberries, to warming oatmeal dishes, these can all be paired with your plant milk or yogurt of choice.

Light Snacks and Side Dishes

Rather than going for a large meal or dinner, perhaps you fancy something a bit lighter. Here are some of our favorite snacks and sides.

2.Sandwiches

Inspired by Mrs. Weasley’s lunch at Grimmauld Place, these sandwiches are simple, yet filling. With a range of different types of breads and fillings to choose from, you’ll often find that you already have the ingredients for a dazzling sandwich in your fridge or pantry.

The options are endless, from a vegan cheese sandwich, to a smashed chickpea “tuna” sandwich, to something more substantial like a Philly cheesesteak.

3. Loaded Baked Potatoes

Another simple yet delicious side dish that Harry enjoys at Grimmauld Place is baked potatoes. There is such a fantastic range of toppings you could choose, most of which are very easy to prepare. We love classic baked beans and vegan cheese as toppings.

You could serve your potatoes alongside a spicy lentil stew or a three-bean chilli, which means you’re saving money and time by creating three meals at the same time!

4.Soup

After reading in the Daily Prophet about the “controversial staff” (a werewolf and a half-giant) who have taught at Hogwarts, Harry heads to the Great Hall for an autumnal lunch of rolls and soup.

We found a cozy and comforting ribollita recipe, which is perfect for filling you up on a cold autumn or winter day. Ribollita is a hearty Tuscan bread soup full of seasonal vegetables.

Ribollita always contains cannellini beans, cavolo nero (or a similar alternative, such as cabbage), and bread (whatever you’ve got in the house will work). It is traditionally reheated over several days, giving it the name ribolla, which means to re-boil, and “refers to the practice of making a large potful (often on a Friday), and reheating it to eat it all weekend.”

We think this would be a staple in the Weasley household!

Mighty Main Meals

There’s nothing better than coming home after a busy day to a homemade meal inspired by the Hogwarts kitchens. Try these to add a little bit of magic into your evening:

5.Roast Chicken and Mashed Potatoes

Another meal Mrs. Weasley cooked at Grimmauld Place was a substantial dinner of mashed potatoes and roast chicken.

This recipe adds some new flavors to the classic side dish, including corn, peas, roasted garlic, and salt. Using unsweetened almond milk or soy milk and dairy-free butter makes these mashed potatoes creamy and fluffy.

6.Shepherd’s Pie

One of the most iconic dinners at Hogwarts is shepherd’s pie. Harry and Ron dig into a large helping of shepherd’s pie after a dull History of Magic lesson about giant wars.

This hearty, warming dinner is normally full of meat and other animal products so we’re here to help you make this classic English meal vegan.

This recipe is a “rich, hearty and easy veggie pie, topped with fluffy sweet potato and crisp zesty breadcrumbs.” It’s loaded with mushrooms, tomatoes, lentils, and chickpeas.

Even better, if you have some leftover mashed potatoes from your roast chicken and mashed potatoes dinner, you have a head start!

7.Meatballs

If you’re in the mood for something less hearty, try a simple pasta recipe accompanied by vegan meatballs.

One night when Arthur is at the Ministry, he casually tells Kingsley that Molly’s making meatballs. We imagine Molly’s take on this classic dish would contain classic Irish flavors and ingredients like whiskey.

Use this recipe as a jumping off point – substituting Beyond ground beef, your favorite non-dairy milk, and plant-based egg substitute. Adding tomato sauce and sauteed veggies makes this dish more filling without the extra cost.

You could also try this Italian-American inspired meatball recipe, which is made with breadcrumbs and herbs.

Delicious Desserts

Once you’ve enjoyed your dinner, if you still have room, be sure to treat yourself to a sweet, Potter-inspired dessert.

8.Rhubarb Crumble and Custard

After a busy day at Grimmauld Place with members of the Order of the Phoenix discussing what should be their next move, Harry enjoyed a rhubarb crumble with custard for dessert.

Here is an easy rhubarb crumble recipe that can easily be made vegan by substituting the butter for dairy-free butter. It only takes around 20 minutes to prepare and has an irresistible crumble topping.

If you want to take it up a notch, check out this vegan custard recipe for a smooth and creamy custard that can be poured on top of your crumble. It only has five ingredients and takes 10 minutes to make.

9.Apple Pie

Inspired by the half-finished apple pie Ron helped himself to after Harry’s iconic scene with Professor McGonagall (“Have a biscuit, Potter”), this vegan apple pie recipe is a delicious treat that is based on a classic American pie.

With warm, baked cinnamon apples and a flaky homemade pie crust, you won’t be leaving your apple pie half-finished.

Top it with vegan custard, coconut whipped cream, iced cream, or whatever takes your fancy.

10.Mince Pies

As per Weasley tradition, Mr. and Mrs. Weasley gifted Harry with some baked goods for Christmas: mince pies. While it might not be the festive season yet, this vegan mince pie recipe is definitely one to put onto your must-bake list next Christmas.

You may find it easier to buy pre-made vegan pastry and vegan mincemeat (be sure to read the labels closely as traditional mincemeat contains beef suet). However, if you want to give it a go yourself, you can make your own flaky and crispy vegan pie crust using this recipe and a rich and fruity vegan mincemeat here.

Once your pastry and mincemeat has been prepared, all you need to do is roll out the pastry, cut it into rounds with a cookie cutter, pop them into a cupcake tin, fill them with the mincemeat, loosely top them with a sheet of foil, then bake until they’re bubbling. They are the perfect giftable treat for your friends and family!

P.S.: Dust off your Remembrall and consider other sweet treats that we’ve encountered in previous books. Whether it’s Cauldron Cakes from Prisoner of Azkaban or Canary Creams from Goblet of Fire, you’re sure to have a limitless supply of festive fare to conjure up before your next Dumbledore’s Army meeting!
